Magic Zone
The MAGIC Zone offers out of school programming for students K- 12, during the school year and summer, serving more than 100 youth from two sites in the Western Addition. The MAGIC Zone is committed to working with the San Francisco Unified School District, families and youth to address academic issues and support our young people through quality programming.
Our program takes a youth development approach, integrating project-based learning in academic, enrichment and recreational activities. The afterschool program operates Monday – Friday, 3:00pm – 6:00pm, and the summer program Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 6:00pm, and primarily serves low income youth of color, representative of marginalized communities.
The high school program offers year round programming for teens, with a partnership with SFUSD to support chronically truant youth during the school year. The Magic Zone’s Teen programming includes enrichment, civic engagement, youth development, community building activities, career explorations, and college prep. The program operates Monday – Friday, 3:00pm – 6:00pm during the school year, and Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 6:00pm during the summer.

Opportunities for All (OFA)
Formerly known as the Community Safety Initiative (CSI)
In 2015, Collective Impact joined forces with the SF Police Commission, the Mayor’s Office and SFPD leadership to create a program to get teens out of their neighborhoods and into the city’s work spaces. The Community Safety Initiative adopted a cohort structure so that youth would develop closer relationships and practice teamwork. We know from this experience that these teens and TAY respond best to programming that helps them set and achieve their own goals; supports their resiliency, strengths and assets; connects their personal experiences to broader issues of social justice; and empowers them to affect change in their communities. We identify needs and map goals during our intake process. Our staff remain in close contact with interns and their families–connecting them to resources and support as needed and as often as needed.
Transitional Aged Youth (TAY)
This project is designed to serve 18-24 year old who live in San Francisco as well as the bay area who have San Francisco ties. The TAY we are targeting face issues of poverty, substance abuse, lack of financial stability and lack of financial support. The biggest need that our targeted population is in need of is employment and housing because that is how they will establish stability necessary to succeed in their employment placement. Our program is designed to meet each individual where they are. After a detailed intake the clients are assessed on whether they are job ready or need more work in order to be placed in a job. Those who are job ready receive weekly one on ones to search, apply and make connections with jobs they may be interested in. The needs around the individuals stability will be addressed through intensive case management and will be measured utilizing the SMART goals established during the intake to track the clients progress weekly.
Youth Tennis Program
One of the standout programs offered at Ella Hill Hutch is made possible through a community partnership with the United States Tennis Association and Collective Impact. The tennis courts at Ella Hill Hutch are open to the public Monday through Saturday; anyone is welcome to reserve time and play on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition to being available to the general public, more than 100 Fillmore District youth during the school year, and more than 300 young people during the summer months, take regular lessons on the Ella Hill Hutch courts. Spearheading these efforts at the community center is Magic Zone staff member Michael Hall, our tennis program manager. Coach Mike is a San Francisco native who grew up in the Western Addition. He had a stellar prep career at Mission High School, and went on to play NCAA D-II tennis at Hampton University in Virginia, before his pro career (1989-1994) took him to tournament play all around the world. As a lifelong resident of the Fillmore District, Mike is thrilled to partner with USTA to coach neighborhood youth, who represent a broad range of ability and experience levels, through tennis lessons at Ella Hill Hutch. It’s a special highlight for Coach Mike to be able to share his love of the game with young people from his own community and lead his students through the importance of sportsmanship, focus, and commitment.

Collaboration
Mo’MAGIC Collaborative
The MAGIC (Mobilization for Adolescent Growth In Our Communities) initiative was founded in 2004 by the Office of the Public Defender, in response to a community-identified need to address the impact of trauma, poverty, and violence on children and youth in targeted San Francisco districts.
The MAGIC collaborative forged a meaningful partnership between community residents, faith-based organizations, city and county agencies, nonprofit organizations, schools, and other stakeholders. In October 2006, the program expanded to serve the Fillmore District | Western Addition communities. Mo’MAGIC (Mo’ for Fillmore) seeks to create opportunities for youth to grow and thrive in a safe and healthy community; to create quality leadership, academic enrichment, and career development opportunities for youth; and to function as an early intervention and response measure that also serves to reduce juvenile crime.
Over the last decade, with Collective Impact as its fiscal sponsor, Mo’MAGIC has convened more than 50 service providers and created meaningful and lasting opportunities for Western Addition youth to grow, succeed, and achieve.
Project Level
Founded in 2012, Project Level is a groundbreaking, socially active non-profit program that nurtures the creative needs of at-risk and underserved Bay Area inner-city youth. Our team is dedicated to providing a safe, experiential learning environment where youth can freely express themselves through the arts.
In San Francisco, youth are enthralled by the arts. Everything from their lifestyle to the way they dress is influenced by music and pop culture. Project Level seeks to harness this creative energy in a positive way, helping students leverage their talents and passions to be successful in both their future careers and in life.
Opening Project Level is a dream come true for Big Rich and Danielle and the ultimate way for them to pay it forward. Together, with our team, they mentor and inspire students, always finding new ways to build our programming and help kids succeed.
